About Counselling

Maybe you are reading this because you have been feeling tense or anxious recently, or you have been feeling unhappy and are considering who to turn to for support.

Counselling is a talking therapy that can help with a wide range of mental health and emotional difficulties, such as stress, anxiety and depression.

“The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well.” Hippocrates

How will I work with you?

I will work with what you wish to bring into the counselling room. The person centred approach under pins my therapeutic work with clients, yet I also bring an integrative approach to my work. This means I draw on different specific therapies and combine these together enabling me to tailor myself to each client’s individual needs and unique circumstances. I will provide a safe and confidential space to provide clients with the opportunity to share whatever is causing them emotional difficulty, inner conflict or creating disharmony in themselves and/or within their lives. I believe that when we are given the opportunity to engage in a safe, confidential relationship, where the client feels deeply accepted, understood and is met with warmth and compassion, that it is possible to become more freely and clearly in touch with what is causing emotional difficulty. This provides an opportunity to re-evaluate your relationship with yourself, others and the world around you. With this expanding self-awareness and shifting perception comes the potential of learning how to be more self-accepting and discovering one’s own answers and solutions, of how to manage presenting difficulties or uncomfortable emotions. In my experience it is through this process of greater clarity and deep self-acceptance that curiously positive change can occur.

“The first step toward change is awareness. The second step is acceptance.” Nathaniel Branden

When I am working with clients I pay close attention to the emotional element of their struggle. I believe that emotions are essentially an important part of your experience of self and others. Emotions can be really enjoyable when we are happy and confident, but can cause us to feel uncomfortable when we experience difficult life circumstances. We might feel anxious or angry and need support to be able to make sense of what happened to us and learn how we can deal with these difficult feelings. Painful emotions can hold us back in life. Negative emotions can change to more positive emotions when we are more aware of them and when we learn to accept them better. I support my clients to learn more helpful ways of dealing with their thoughts, feelings and behaviours so that they can find new ways of living and lead a more enjoyable, fulfilling life.

What issues are suitable for Counselling/Psychotherapy?

Counselling can empower us to learn how to manage and deal with any issue in life that we find is causing emotional difficulty or disturbance. Counselling can be helpful to process traumatic events, bereavement, difficult emotions such as anger, anxiety, depression or loneliness. Counselling can also support individuals experiencing significant life changes, such as ill health, loss of employment or divorce. Counselling can also benefit those who wish to process relationship difficulties, providing an opportunity to discover how to improve intimate/family relationships and the way you interact with people.

How many sessions will you need?

The number of sessions you need are entirely unique to each individual’s needs and set of circumstances and this can vary from just a few sessions to longer term work. Contracting of how many sessions and continuation of sessions will be discussed in our first session and during regular reviews of our therapeutic work together.
